Below you will find information regarding our P.E. curriculum, fitness testing protocols, and the syllabus that all students were given the first day of class and asked to take home and have signed.
North Carolina P.E. Standards
Per the NC standards and curriculum, students will be tested on their cardiovascular fitness every two weeks through the 1-Mile Timed Run or the 20-meter Pacer Test. Based on national standards of fitness zones, a formal assessment grade will be given for a grade. As long as students attempt the test, they will receive credit and be given the option to re-test at any time they choose. Individual effort and improvements in performance as the semester progresses will factor in when grading.
SYLLABUS
Welcome to Independence High School’s Physical Education class. We hope you are looking forward to learning and experiencing the benefits of a healthy lifestyle. It is our goal to develop the mind and the body of each student through all contents of physical fitness.
The vision/mission for each class is that students become educated and skilled in a multitude of physical activities, cooperative games, and sports. Getting students actively involved in all class activities is desired to improve overall fitness and knowledge on the importance of being healthy, as young adults.
Objectives of Physical Education:
· 9.MS.1 – Apply competent motor skills and movement patterns needed to perform a variety of physical activities.
· 9.MC.2 – Understand concepts, principles, strategies, and tactics that apply to the learning and performance of movement.
· 9.HF.3 – Understand the importance of achieving and maintaining a health-enhancing level of physical fitness.
· 9.PR.4 – Use behavioral strategies that are responsible and enhance respect of self and others and value activity.
CLASS EXPECTATIONS
1. Students will be to class on time (boys – through glass doors, girls – through side-stairs door).
2. Students will fully dress out for active participation with a complete change of clothes, not what was worn to school (shirt, shorts/pants, tennis shoes). PE clothes must comply with school dress code (no tank tops, beaters, tights/leggings, short shorts, cut/tight shirts).
3. Students will positively/actively engage in ALL class activities – stretches, exercises, cardio, and culminating activity – to the best of their individual ability.
4. Students will be respectful to others (teachers & peers) within the class, and display good sporting behavior & positive encouragement to all.
5. Students will remain in their designated class area, for the entire class period, unless given permission otherwise. 6. Students will follow all directions/instructions given by any teachers within the department.
ELECTRONICS POLICY
As per student handbook, there are to be NO cell phones or electronics in use during instructional times. This includes Physical Education. Please be advised that teachers will confiscate cell phones/headphones if visible during class.
FIRE DRILL PROCEDURE
In the event of a fire drill, students will immediately evacuate the building using the nearest door available and report directly to the track. Once there, they will meet with their Physical Education teacher for attendance and further directions.
GRADING POLICY In line with the CMS procedures, the following criteria will be used for all students:
Performance/Tests = Formal Participation = Informal
Daily Effort On Time/Seated for Attendance
Sportsmanship Preparedness/Dressing Out
Physical Fitness Tests Participate for ALL class activities (warm-up and unit)
*Students will receive one Formal and one Informal grade per week in Physical Education. Failure to properly dress out for class will result in a 20 point deduction from the weekly “participation” grade. However, students are still expected to participate in what they wore to school in order to still earn some credit for that day. Poor effort or sportsmanship will be reflected in a loss of “performance” points.
LOCKS/LOCKERS
-All students will be required to keep their belongings in the locker room during class. Bags, backpacks, cell phones and personal possessions will NOT be allowed in the gym for any reason.
-Students need to supply their own lock to secure their things in the locker room. If belongings are not securely locked, possessions may be stolen/lost.
-Students should not share lockers or lock combos for security reasons.
-At the end of each class, students are to take home all belongings, including locks. There is not enough lockers to allow items to be kept locked overnight.
PLEASE BE ADVISED THAT EVERY EFFORT IS MADE TO KEEP LOCKER ROOMS SECURED AT ALL TIMES. THE P.E. DEPARTMENT IS NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR LOST OR STOLEN ITEMS. PLEASE KEEP ALL VALUABLES LOCKED IN YOUR LOCKER TO AVOID LOSS/THEFT.
SAFETY
The following safety suggestions will be adhered to:
1. Students will be in appropriate P.E. attire in order to participate in class.
2. Students will not be allowed to wear hanging jewelry.
3. Students will lace and properly tie sneakers/cleats prior to participation.
4. Students will not bring food/drinks/gum into the locker room and the gym areas.
5. Students will not leave the P.E. area without the teacher’s permission.
6. Students will immediately report all injuries to the P.E. teacher in charge.

I have read and understand the above Independence High School Physical Education rules and expectations. I understand that the student is fully responsible for their actions, behaviors, and grades. Additionally, it has been made clear that a lock must be brought in by the student and used to properly secure all belongings. Failure to do so may result in loss/theft, of which Independence P.E. is not responsible for.
